The 8th Symposium of World’s Chinese Scientists on Nutrition & Feeding of Finfish and Shellfish was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province from September 7 to 9, 2011. Board chairman of Tongwei Group, Mr. Liu Hanyuan and a delegation consisting of researchers and reporters from Tongwei were present at the symposium.
The theme of the symposium is ‘nutrition, health, safety and sustainable development’. There were in total 15 invited lectures, 89 oral presentations and 266 posters presented at the symposium. Mr. Liu addressed the symposium and gave an invited lecture entitled ‘The industry pattern and technical strength of China’s aquafeed industry’. He said, in 2010, China’s total aquaculture production was 38.2884 million tons, and the total aquafeed production was 14 million tons. Due to scattered farming, farming breed and mode differences by area, and especially the enormous impact of water on aquaculture effect, the whole industry still stays at the surface level in fish and shrimp research. Based on the retrospection of Tongwei Co., Ltd.’s development path of the past 20 years, this paper elaborates the industry patterns of aquafeed at different stages, and analyses the pushing effects of raw material techniques, formulation techniques, production techniques and marketing techniques at different stages. Finally, the paper looks into the development path of aquafeed enterprises in the next 10-20 years.

The symposium was organized by the Aquatic Nutrition and Feeding Society of China Society of Fisheries, and jointly undertaken by Shanghai Ocean University, Sichuan Agricultural University and Tongwei Co., Ltd. Participants from various parts of the world gathered together to exchange views on the topics including protein and amino acids; molecular nutrition; aquatic quality and safety; vitamins and minerals; non-nutritional feed additive; nutrition, health and environment etc.
